Arkan (Elements)

The human body is composed of the four elements of air, earth, fire, and water. There is a particular temperament for each element or arkan. The earth has a cold and dry temperament, whereas air is hot and humid. Water has a cold and moist temperament, while fire is hot and dry.

2. Mizaj:

In the Unani system of medicine, the Mizaj (temperament)of an individual plays an important role as each individual’s temperament is unique. In the diagnosis and treatment of the Unani system, Mizaj acts as the base. Thus, Mijaz in Unani helps characterize a person’s physical, mental, and social state and also identifies the nature of a disease.

AKLAT (HUMOURS)

Humours are the fluids in the human body that produce energy, and trigger growth, nutrition, and repair. The humours also perform the function of maintaining moisture in different organs of the human body. the proper diets are supposed to produce good humours or Akhla Sahila, the improper diets are expected to produce Akhla Radiyya, or bad humour.

AAZA (ORGANS)

Azaa are the various organs that account for the effective functioning of the human body. The health of each organ affects the overall health of the body, and any disease in the organs creates an imbalance in the health equilibrium.

ARWAH (SPIRIT)

Ruh or spirit is a matter that assists in all the metabolic activities of the human body. Obtained from the inspired air, it acts as the source of energy for the effective functioning of all the organs of the body. The Ruh burns the Akhlat Latifa and produces power (quwa).

QUWA (POWER)

There are three types of Quwa:

This is the power of metabolism and reproduction. The process is carried out on every tissue of the body, with the liver being the seat of this power.
Quwa Nafsaniyah is psychic and nervous power that is located inside the brain and is responsible for generating motive and perceptive power.
The vital power is located in the heart and keeps the tissues functioning. It allows for all organs to accept the outcome of psychic power.

AFAAL (FUNCTIONS)

Afaal is the movement and proper functioning of all the organs of the human body. When the body is healthy, it means that all organs are in proper shape and are functioning efficiently.

Our Origination and Development

The Unani System of Medicine originated in ancient Greece, where the initial concepts of Medicine were adopted from Egypt and Mesopotamia and later systematized by the Greeks. The Romans further developed these concepts, and in the Middle Ages, the system spread to the Arab world, Central Asian countries, and parts of Europe, where it reached great heights.

In India, the Unani System of Medicine was brought by Arab and Iranian physicians and flourished to become a permanent part of Indian medicine. Today, India is a global leader in Unani System of Medicine, with increasing support and funding from the government.

The government has prioritized the development of the Unani System of Medicine and other traditional Indian systems of medicine for healthcare delivery, leading to significant advancements in education, research, and healthcare in Unani Medicine over the past seven decades.

The Unani system of medicine, along with other traditional systems like Ayurveda and Homoeopathy, is under the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The country has an infrastructure of academic, research, and healthcare institutions for Unani Medicine, including 41 teaching institutions and 8 postgraduate programs in 15 specialties.

Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) has been established by the Central Government to conduct postgraduate education and research in Unani Medicine and develop standards of training and healthcare. India is also promoting the Unani system globally due to its resurgence of interest and validation of its scientific strengths.

The education and practice of Unani System of Medicine is under the regulatory control of Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is a statutory body established through an Act of Parliament - the Indian Medicine Central Council (IMCC) Act, 1970. Now known as NCISM- National commission for Indian System of Medicine (2022).

The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) is in charge of the majority of unani medicine research and development. Over the past 35 years, the Council has established itself as the foremost organisation for publishing significant scientific findings and documents for use and reference in this area. The contribution of CCRUM has been recognised on a global scale as a result of the insights gained in clinical research, pharmacological standardisation, survey and cultivation of medicinal plants, and literary study.

The Pharmacopoeial Laboratory for Indian Medicine (PLIM) is functioning since 1970 as an appellate laboratory for testing of traditional medicines including Unani drugs and development of pharmacopoeial standards under the purview of Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine (PCIM).

Unani System of Medicine believes that every individual has its own unique temperament according to their humoral constitution, lifestyle and environment. Any deviation from its normal temperament results into disease. The management of the disease depends upon the correction of altered temperament by using various regimens and drugs.

Holistic approach:

For the management of a disease, Unani System of Medicine takes entire constitution of the individual and lifestyle into account for diagnosing and prescribing the treatment. Physicians select the drugs and regimens according to the temperament of the patient and nature of the disease.

Regimenal therapy:

Unani System of Medicine makes use of certain special modes and regimens ofdiet,physical movements,lifestyle etc.and techniques such as cupping (Ḥijāmat),leeching (Ta‘līq),venesection (Faṣd) etc.to eliminate the morbid humours from the body (Tanqiya),Massage (Dalk),Purgation (Ishāl),Emesis (Qay’),About Unani – Strength of UnaniDiuresis (Idrār-i Bawl),Enema (Ḥuqna),Diaphoresis (Ta‘rīq),Expectoration (Tanfīth),Counter Irritation (Īlām),Sitz Bath (Ābzan) etc.Some other regimens are also used for elimination/diversion of morbid material or resolution of the inflammation, e.g. Turkish bath (Ḥammām), Irrigation (Natūl), Fomentation (Takmīd) etc.
